The short answer

Most insurers let you choose 70%, 80% or 90%: Embrace, Fetch, Lemonade, Pets Best and Spot all list those three. Odie offers 70% or 90% (accident-only plans are fixed at 90%), and Healthy Paws says its options run from 50% to 90%.

The rate is the share of each covered bill the insurer pays after your deductible; the rest is yours.

What this means for your dog

On a $4,000 covered bill with a $250 deductible already met, 90% reimbursement pays $3,600 and leaves you $400; 70% pays $2,800 and leaves you $1,200. The difference grows with the size of the bill, so it matters most for the expensive claims: cruciate surgery in a Labrador Retriever, cancer treatment in a Golden Retriever, or airway surgery in a French Bulldog.

A higher rate costs more each month. In our estimates the step from 80% to 90% raises the premium by about 15%, and dropping to 70% lowers it by about 12% (how we estimate). If you expect few claims, 70% or 80% with a moderate deductible keeps the price down; if one large bill would be hard to cover, 90% protects you more.

The rate works together with the deductible and the annual limit: the deductible comes off first, then the rate applies, then the annual limit caps the total. Deductibles by insurer and annual limits by insurer.

Before you buy

  • Check which percentages the insurer offers in your state; options can differ by plan.
  • Ask whether you can change the rate at renewal, and whether raising it means new exclusions.
  • Compare the monthly price at 70%, 80% and 90% with the same deductible.
  • Work out what you would pay on one large bill at each rate, not just the premium.

Questions owners ask

What does 80% reimbursement mean in pet insurance?

After you meet the deductible, the insurer pays 80% of each covered bill and you pay the other 20%, up to the annual limit.

Which pet insurers offer 90% reimbursement?

All seven insurers we could check offer 90%: Embrace, Fetch, Healthy Paws, Lemonade, Odie, Pets Best and Spot.

Is 90% reimbursement worth it?

It pays more on every claim but raises the premium. It is worth it if a large bill would be hard to pay; with few expected claims, 70% or 80% can cost less overall.

Does any pet insurance pay 100%?

None of the seven insurers we could check lists a 100% option; their highest published rate is 90%.
