The short answer

The emergency exam alone costs a few hundred dollars: NC State's veterinary hospital charges $292 and Colorado State's $175[8][9], and Pumpkin's claims data puts the average dog emergency bill at $653[10]. Surgery or an overnight stay can take the total into the thousands.

Most insurers reimburse you after you pay; a few can pay the vet directly.

What this means for your dog

An emergency bill builds up in layers. NC State lists initial stabilization at $600 to $900 on top of the exam fee. MetLife puts an emergency exam at $200 or more, emergency surgery at $5,000 or more and hospitalization at up to $1,500 a night[11]. Pumpkin's claims show smaller emergencies too: lacerations averaged $203 and bite wounds $420.

The biggest emergency bills come from conditions like bloat in breeds such as the Great Dane and German Shepherd, or IVDD in a Dachshund. These are the bills accident and illness insurance is built for, once waiting periods have passed.

Paying at the ER is the hard part: most policies reimburse you afterwards, and Fetch, for one, says you pay the vet at the time of service. Pets Best and Spot can pay the vet directly if you ask, Healthy Paws if you request it before treatment, and Odie where it has an arrangement with the clinic. Exam fees are a separate question: which insurers cover the exam fee.

Before you buy

  • Find the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital before you need it.
  • Check whether your insurer can pay the ER directly and how to request it.
  • Know whether the exam fee is covered or an add-on.
  • Keep a card or savings ready for the deposit and your share.
