Anxiety and other behavior problems can need a vet or a behaviorist. What each insurer pays for.

The short answer

Embrace, Fetch and Spot cover behavioral treatment by a vet in their accident and illness policies (Fetch up to $1,000 a year); Lemonade sells a behavioral add-on, Odie and Pets Best cover only consultations and medications through add-ons, and Healthy Paws excludes it.

General obedience classes are not what this cover is for; it pays for treating a diagnosed behavioral condition.

What this means for your dog

Behavior problems are medical more often than owners expect: separation anxiety, noise phobia, compulsive licking or sudden aggression can need a vet diagnosis, medication and a behavior plan. Any breed can need it, from a rescue mix to a high-drive Australian Shepherd or Belgian Malinois, so it is worth checking even if your dog is calm today.

The rules differ. Spot covers treatment by a vet or a certified behaviorist with a written vet referral. Lemonade's add-on has its own $1,000 yearly limit. Embrace and Fetch exclude behavior issues that started before the policy.

Like other illnesses, a behavior problem noted in the vet record before enrollment is pre-existing. If you are adopting an adult dog, insure early, before the first behavior notes are written.

Medication is often part of treatment. Odie and Pets Best cover behavioral consultations and prescription drugs only when the matching optional benefits were bought, so if your dog is anxious or reactive, choose those benefits at enrollment.

Before you buy

  • Check whether behavioral treatment is in the base policy, an add-on or excluded.
  • Read who can provide it: a vet only, or a behaviorist with a vet referral.
  • Ask about a separate yearly limit for behavioral care.
  • Make sure no behavior notes are in the vet record before enrolling.
