Does pet insurance cover spay and neuter?
Not under accident and illness cover, but several wellness add-ons pay toward it. How much, insurer by insurer.
Updated October 6, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
Not under the accident and illness policy: spay and neuter are routine procedures, and all seven insurers we could check leave them out of the base cover. Pets Best, Spot and Odie pay up to $150 a year through a wellness add-on, Embrace and Fetch list them in their wellness add-ons, Lemonade may cover them through preventative coverage, and Healthy Paws doesn't cover them at all.

What this means for your dog
The $150 caps at Pets Best, Spot and Odie are shared: they cover spay or neuter or a dental cleaning, so using one uses the other. Compare that with what your vet charges for the procedure before deciding the add-on pays for itself. When wellness plans are worth it.
Timing matters for puppies. The procedure is often done in the first year, the same year many owners first insure, so a wellness add-on bought with a new puppy policy has a clear use. For a Poodle or Golden Retriever puppy, ask your vet about the right age and the price, then compare it with the add-on's yearly cost. Insuring a puppy.
Complications are a separate question. A complication after surgery is a medical problem, not a routine procedure; check how the policy treats it before the operation.
Before you buy
- Check whether the wellness add-on lists spay or neuter, and the yearly cap.
- See whether the cap is shared with dental cleaning or other items.
- Get your vet's price for the procedure and compare it with the add-on's yearly cost.
- Ask how complications after the surgery are covered.
