Can you insure an older dog?

Yes. Among the insurers we compare, Spot and Odie have no upper age limit to enroll. Others set a maximum enrollment age or change the plan options for older dogs, so check before you apply. Once enrolled, most insurers keep renewing the policy as the dog ages.

What it costs

Premiums rise steeply with age. For the median breed on BreedSure, national average, 80% reimbursement, $250 deductible:

The catch: pre-existing conditions

An older dog has years of vet records, and anything in them can be excluded as pre-existing. A policy for a senior dog protects against what hasn't happened yet: new accidents and new illnesses. If your main worry is a condition your dog already has, insurance won't cover it. How insurers decide.

Conditions that often appear later in life

Typical US treatment cost per episode. One of these bills can be larger than several years of premiums, even at a senior price.

Your options

  • Accident and illness: the full cover, at the highest price. Worth comparing a higher deductible to keep the premium down.
  • Accident-only: much cheaper, covers injuries only. A fit when illness cover is too expensive or would exclude too much.
  • A savings fund: put the premium aside each month instead. It covers anything, pre-existing included, but only up to what you have saved.
