Does pet insurance cover dental?
Dental disease and dental cleanings are treated very differently. Here is what each insurer pays for.
Updated October 2, 2026. Plan facts come from each insurer's published documents; each insurer's policy documents control.
The short answer
Dental illness is covered by most insurers, but how much varies: Fetch covers disease in every adult tooth, Spot covers extractions and periodontal disease, Embrace caps dental illness at $1,000 a year, Lemonade needs an add-on, and Odie, Pets Best and Healthy Paws limit what they pay for gum disease.
Routine cleanings are not covered by any of these accident and illness policies; they belong to wellness add-ons.

What this means for your dog
Small and toy breeds carry most of the dental risk. Crowded teeth in the Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Dachshund, Pomeranian, Maltese and Shih Tzu trap plaque, and dental disease often ends in extractions under anesthesia. For these breeds, the dental row of the table matters more than almost any other.
Read the conditions, not only the yes or no. Odie and Pets Best cover periodontal treatment only for certain teeth (canine and carnassial) plus extractions, and Odie asks for a recent anesthetic cleaning and exam from age three. Healthy Paws excludes extractions due to dental disease, and periodontal disease that comes from a lack of preventive care.
Keeping up with cleanings protects the claim as well as the teeth. If you want cleanings paid, compare the wellness add-ons: Spot's Platinum and Pets Best's BestWellness, for example, include a set amount toward a cleaning.
Before you buy
- Check whether dental illness is in the base policy or an add-on, and any yearly dental limit.
- Look for conditions on gum disease, such as a recent cleaning or only certain teeth being covered.
- Ask whether extractions caused by dental disease are covered.
- If you want cleanings paid, compare wellness add-ons separately.
Questions owners ask
Does pet insurance cover teeth cleaning?
Not under an accident and illness policy. Routine cleanings are excluded by all seven insurers we could check; some wellness add-ons, such as Spot Platinum or Pets Best BestWellness, pay a set amount toward one.
Does pet insurance cover tooth extractions?
Usually, when caused by a covered illness or injury. Fetch, Spot, Odie and Pets Best name extractions; Lemonade covers them with its dental add-on; Healthy Paws excludes extractions due to dental disease.
Is periodontal disease covered?
At Fetch, Spot and Embrace (up to $1,000 a year) yes, if not pre-existing. Lemonade needs the dental illness add-on. Odie and Pets Best limit it to canine and carnassial teeth plus extractions.
Is dental disease pre-existing if my dog has tartar?
It can be. Signs noted in the vet record before the policy starts can make related dental disease pre-existing, so a dental check and cleaning before enrolling is worth considering.
